The use of an elephant as a mascot was not implemented until 1874 when Thomas Nast drew a cartoon for his newspaper. In it, a elephant with the words "Republican Vote" written on it is cowering from a donkey in lion's skin. By the 1880's, other cartoonist joined Nast and began to commonly associate the Elephant with the Republican party.
The elephant symbolizes strength and dignity.
