History
One of the two main parties in America today, its name dates back to 1792 when Thomas Jefferson referred to his supporters as Republicans. However, Jefferson's party eventually became known as the Democratic-Republicans which later evolved into the Democratic Party, not the modern Republican Party.
The actual Republican Party was formed in Jackson, Mississippi in 1854 when a group of politicians who banded against slavery decided to form a political party. Although new to the political battlefield, the Republic Party soon displaced one of the two main parties then, the Whig Party, and became the main contender of the Democratic Party.
In the election of 1860, the Democratic Party split its on its views of slavery. With this, Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election, becoming the first president from the Republican party. Because of the great feats of President Lincoln, the party is sometimes referred to as the "party of Lincoln." Since then, the Republican Party has become a major, if not main, party in the U.S. presidential elections.
In the election of 1932, the Republican Party took a large hit. Suffering from the Great Depression, Americans largely blamed the party for its failing economy. As such, candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt won the election, and would be re-elected three more times. The last Republican president was George W. Bush.
