History
The Constitution Party was originally called as the U.S. Taxpayer's Party. In 1992, Howard Phillips formed the Taxpayer's Party in Louisiana. In 1996, the party was officially recognized by the Federal Election Committee, being the fifth party to be national recognized.
Since its recognition, the Constitution Party has run for office in five presidential races (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012). However, they have yet to win a presidential election.
While the party began as the U.S. Taxpayers' Party, in 1999 the party officially changed its name to the Constitution Party. This change was done largely to reflect the core values that this party had.
Philosophy
As the name implies, the Constitution Party bases its values off of the United States Constitution. Some may even call the party members "Constitutionists." Members believe in interpreting the literal wording of the Constitution as law. As such, they believe in less governmental interaction and more individual freedom.
The party is also very religious based. Many of their values are based off of biblical teachings.
